When the original Xbox was launched in 2001, there were already three central pillars of the video game industry. Nintendo, Sony, and Sega. While Sega was on the way out, Microsoft saw a threat in Sony.
Sony had positioned the PS2 as the central focus of home entertainment. At the time, Microsoft controlled the computer software industry, and if there were no computers, there would be no Microsoft.
Thus, the Xbox was conceived by a dedicated team who wanted to combine PC gaming with top notch technology. The original Xbox was different, from controversial advertising to online gameplay.
