The One Super Mario Game That Everyone Forgot About

You may not be familiar with Mario’s first Game Boy outing, but it’s well worth returning to

For most of my childhood, the Game Boy was my best friend, I took the thing everywhere from the playground to family road trips. I’d play late into the night with one of those worm lights attached to illuminate the screen.

My first Game Boy was the Game Boy Color, and the great thing about owning a GBC was that it could play the original Game Boy catalog as well. By the time that I had gotten my GBC in 1998, the original game library was huge.

One of the first games that I picked up of course was Super Mario Land. I was a junkie for anything with Mario on the packaging, and this game looked like it was an exciting port of the console games that I so loved.

Super Mario Land was the first full Super Mario platforming adventure on a handheld game system. While it wasn’t an exact port of the original the game had some unique aspects that we wouldn’t see again.
